MapServer is an open-source development environment for building spatially enabled internet applications. It can run as a CGI program or via MapScript which supports several programming languages.
MapServer is written in C and is widely known as one of the fastest mapping engines in the world. Beyond browsing GIS data, MapServer allows you create “geographic image maps”, that is, maps that can direct users to web content.

It is supported by a diverse group of organizations that fund enhancements and maintenance, and is administered within OSGeo by the MapServer Project Steering Committee. MapServer is driven by a very vibrant and helpful Open Source community.
