PostGIS is a spatial database extender for PostgreSQL object-relational database. It adds support for geographic objects, allowing location queries to be run in SQL and follows the Simple Features for SQL specification from the OGC.
In addition to basic location awareness and web server functionality, PostGIS offers many features rarely found in other competing spatial databases such as Oracle Locator/Spatial and SQL Server.

PostGIS is 100% community developed open source software, used by organizations around the world to bring geospatial intelligence into their applications and data processing systems.
